Lupus Research Institute Announces Groundbreaking Global Research Initiative

LRI president Margaret Dowd announced the new Distinguished Innovators program amid the nation’s foremost scientists gathered at the 11th annual Lupus Research Institute Scientific Conference, “Forum for Discovery.”

Today the Sierra Club announced a partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies that will effectively retire one-third of the nation’s aging coal fleet by 2020, replacing it with clean energy. The partnership includes a $50 million commitment over four years to the Beyond Coal Campaign that will fuel the Sierra Club’s effort to clean the air, end the coal era, and accelerate the transition to cleaner, cost-effective energy sources.

Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced a $24 million initiative to fund Innovation Delivery Teams that help mayors effectively design and implement solutions to pressing city challenges. The three-year initiative will fund teams, comprised of high-performing staff, in five cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Louisville, Memphis, and New Orleans. To meet each city’s impact goals in priority areas, these teams will generate innovative solutions, develop implementation plans, and manage progress towards defined targets.

Over 1 Billion Newly Protected By Effective Tobacco Control Policies

Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced that the focused multi-national effort to implement effective tobacco control policies has made dramatic headway since 2008, with 1.1 billion people newly protected by at least one effective tobacco control policy since that time. According to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) today, 55 percent of the world’s population is now covered by at least one of the WHO’s MPOWER suite of six effective anti-tobacco policies. Bloomberg Philanthropies has helped fuel this progress through its six-year $375-million initiative to promote these interventions in 15 low- and middle-income nations that are home to two-thirds of the world’s smokers.

C40 and ICLEI to Establish Global Standard on Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Cities

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, announced today at the C40 Cities Mayors Summit in Sao Paulo that the two organizations will establish a global standard for accounting and reporting community-scale greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that can be used across multiple platforms. This common approach will help local governments to accelerate their emission reduction activities whilst meeting the needs of climate financing, national monitoring and reporting requirements. The standard will be released in time for UNFCCC COP 17 in November (Durban, South Africa).

Bloomberg Philanthropies Applauds Initiative to Promote Road Safety

Michael R. Bloomberg joined World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick in Washington, DC April 19th 2011 for the launch of the Multilateral Development Banks’ Road Safety Initiative. As part of the Initiative, the seven development banks (African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, World Bank) will leverage their investments to ensure safe transport and better health outcomes; outline a structure for client countries to seek support and guidance on best practices in road safety; develop a grant-making fund to build road safety management capacity in low- and middle-income countries; and call on public and private stakeholders to contribute resources to the goals of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety.
